Climate resilient gardening

It’s tempting to think that we need to plant just for dry, hot weather, but here Rachael explains why this isn’t the best idea.

With a more unpredictable climate we should be focussing on ‘what we do’ and ‘when we do it’ to make our gardens as resilient to climate change as possible and in this short video Rachael explains how to do this with her top tips.

Plant now

In the autumn the soil is warm and moist and plants won’t be stressed as they aren’t actively growing. This will make them more resilient to our hot dry spring and summers.

Plant small

One litre perennial plants will quickly grow to the size of much bigger plants, and the roots will grow into your environment rather than having to adapt to your environment.

Ground cover

Covering the ground helps a climate resilient garden. Evergreen plants spread to form a carpet, help reduce water loss, prevent the soil from drying out, filter heavy rain and provide habitat for wildlife.

We have lots of plants available in our plant nursery that are perfect for creating your climate resilient garden – including the pachysandra and adjuga mentioned here.
