Here’s what to do if your summer pots are looking a little tired and in need of a refresh.
A ‘bulb lasagne’ is the perfect way to replant your bedding pots and create a beautiful display of flowers that will last all through to next spring.
Choose bulbs that don’t mind being planted when it’s still warm, narcissus, grape hyacinths and crocus are perfect – and avoid tulips until it’s colder as they can suffer from a fungal disease.
Watch the video to see Rachael talk us through it step by step.
Step 1
Add broken pots – to make sure compost doesn’t fall out.
Step 2
Add a layer of compost – about a third full, including grit for drainage.
Step 3
Plant the narcissus, these are the larger taller bulbs and you can use the whole pack. Plant 10cm deep with the plate down first and the pointy bit up! These will come up in April.
Step 4
Another layer of compost!
Step 5
Grape hyacinths next, spread evenly and at least twice the depth of the bulb (approx. 8cm deep). The will appear in March – April time.
Step 6
Add another layer of compost…
Step 7
The shortest bulbs, crocus go in next. These will be the first to flower in February to March.
Step 8
Add our final thin layer of compost, the crocus shouldn’t be too deep.
Finally
To avoid a pot of mud over winter add violas or pansies to give colour!
