The Restorers

Welcome to Babylon Eco Centre’s “The Restorers”

At Babylon Eco Centre, we’re proud to announce that in 2025 we will launch an onsite repair service, a sustainable solution to breathe life back into the items you treasure most. Inspired by the beloved concept of the BBC’s The Repair Shop, our service focuses on restoring cherished possessions, helping you preserve memories while reducing waste.

Unlike similar TV shows, we bring the restoration process experience closer to home, offering a more personal touch tailored to your needs. Unlike the show’s focus on select stories for broadcast, our service is community-driven and open to all. Whether it’s a beloved piece of furniture, a vintage keepsake, or even tools you can’t bear to part with, our skilled artisans will repair it with the same level of care and craftsmanship.

By choosing The Restorers, you contribute to a more sustainable future while preserving the things you hold dear. Together, we can make sustainability personal, practical, and beautiful.

Courses

In 2025 The Restorers will launch a series of courses focusing on some of the skills needed to start your journey as a restorer. For more information please email therestorers@babylon.eco.

Restoration work at Babylon

Since we purchased our unique location in June 2023, we have been on a journey restoring this unique location to it’s former glory. It’s been a journey. The image to the right is us starting work on restoring an external lighting system that we think was installed in the 1970’s when a football pool’s winner invested in the site. She insisted on the best and we are starting work restoring one of the WIlliam Sugg’s Windsor lamps.

They were the very best that money could buy at the time and it is worth looking over the history of this street lighting system on their website.

Initial Assessment

Every repair begins with a thorough evaluation of your item.

  • What we assess:
    • The type of damage or wear.
    • The complexity of the repair.
    • The materials or parts needed.
  • What you get:
    • A detailed explanation of what needs to be done and the potential outcomes.

We charge a small assessment fee of £20 for this step, which is deductible from the final repair cost if you choose to proceed.

Step 2: Time Estimate

We calculate the time it will take to restore your item.

  • Simple Repairs: (e.g., fixing a loose hinge)
    ~ 1–2 hours.
  • Moderate Repairs: (e.g., restoring a faded finish or repairing intricate details)
    ~ 2–6 hours.
  • Complex Repairs: (e.g., antique restoration or repairing severely damaged items)
    ~ 6+ hours.

Our hourly rate is £30 and reflects the skill, care, and attention to detail your treasured item deserves.

Step 3: Material Costs

Certain repairs require special materials or replacement parts.

  • What we consider:
    • Quality of the materials.
    • Matching colors, finishes, or specific components.
  • Transparency Guaranteed:
Any additional material costs are clearly listed in your quote & have additional 20% sourcing fee included
Step 4: Optional Extras

Need your repair expedited or want additional restoration work? We can tailor your service to your needs:

  • Rush Service: There is a 25% surcharge for expedited orders
  • Custom Add-ons: We can discuss refinishing or enhancements beyond the basic repair.
