Striking and beautiful sculptures by the artist Keith Pettit now in our courtyard.
Keith Pettit is a local artist based in East Sussex. His work is inspired by his landscape, whether subject matter for his exquisitely produced wood engravings or providing material for his organic wooden sculptures and huge bonfire creations. There is a sense of ‘old magic’ woven into his work, always drawing from the history of place to root his art into its surroundings.
ANCIENT TIMBERS
5000 year old bog oak, found on the Pevensey Levels.
THE INSTALLATION PROCESS
Keith installing the sculptures in our Courtyard.
This collection of sculptures here at Babylon range from 5000 year old bog oak discovered at the Pevensey Levels, rare elms felled to stem the spread of Dutch elm disease in Seaford and locally sourced Wealden oak. Keith uses a range of techniques, and tools in his practise; from chainsaws to blowtorches, natural oils and traditional coach enamels – always working with a clear empathy for the natural material, tapping into the intimate knowledge gathered for the evolving interaction with out natural environment.
FOUNT
Elder and oak.
RIPEN
All the sculptures can be placed indoors or out. They are intended, if used in an outdoor setting, to be placed to work with sympathetic planting, blurring the lines between the natural and man made. As with all timber outdoors, treating with an annual oiling will prolong the life and maintain the look of the piece, whilst placed indoors, the sculpture would need some protection for sources of full sun and high heat.
