10th June: Jazz in The Greenhouse

The GFI trio playing saxophone, harp and bass guitar.

Featuring arguably the world’s best Jazz Harpist, Park Stickney, we are honoured to host an evening of jazz in the Greenhouse with ‘Gustaf, Frederick & Isabel’ who have come over from Switzerland and are holding their only gig in Sussex at Babylon.

You can expect to be taken on a journey through pulsating grooves, cascading melodies and unexpected improvisations, possibly including a Rubik’s cube (yes, really!).

With Araxi Isabel Karnusian on tenor saxophone, Björn Gustaf Meyer on bass and Park Stickney on harp, the trio have worked together for many years and their repertoire has evolved into magical original compositions.

Here’s what Der Bund Newspaper has written about them:

Gustaf, Frederick & Isabel has ushered in nothing less than a reinvention of the jazz trio…finely grooving, humming rather than screaming, dream-walking rather than galloping.”

About the trio

The trio Gustav, Frederick & Isabel (confusingly not their real names!) were formed in the Autumn of 2015 in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland.

Park Stickney

Park has duelled (improvisationally) with pianist Jean-François Zygel, and recorded with the ‘Crash Test Dummies’. He has performed at the White House and given a sold-out solo show in Sennheiser Hall, Shanghai. He teaches at the Royal Academy of Music, London and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Lyon, France.

He is also a spectacularly absent Swiss volunteer fireman.

Araxi Karnusian

From the mountains of Switzerland, Araxi has worked as a freelance saxophonist, composer and bandleader since 2003, performing at festivals and venues across Europe, Taiwan, America and Brazil.

Deeply influenced by jazz and traditional music from around the world, she’s travelled across four continents to study indigenous sounds and refine her craft.

His work includes long-standing collaborations with Tunisian oud virtuoso Anouar Brahem, the Swedish contemporary folk trio Bazar Blå, German-Afghan vocalist Simin Tander, and the Swiss composer-performer Don Li.
